HAITI: Quake
Survivors Brace for Hurricane Season |
 |
| Hurricane
season blows into Haiti in June, following months of drenching spring rains.
"We're going to see flooding, we're going to see landslides," says Catherine
Jones, the IRC's protection coordinator in Port-au-Prince, which is still being
rocked by aftershocks from the devastating January 12 earthquake. The IRC is
helping quake survivors prepare for what is predicted to be an "extreme" season
of storms, and helping those most at risk — including families who live in
particularly unstable areas and who have severely damaged houses — move to safe
locations being readied for them outside the city. |

| BOISE: Touchdown! |
 |
|
 |
For five Tuesdays this spring, a group of teenagers in
Boise, Idaho, have been getting together in the afternoon to play football.
There's nothing very unusual about that -- except that before they moved to
Boise these kids had never before even touched a football. Refugees from Bhutan,
Burundi, Myanmar (Burma), Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the teens
are taking part in a football camp run jointly by the IRC's after-school
program, the Boise Language Academy and the semi-pro Treasure Valley Spartans
football team. | |

CENTRAL
AFRICAN REPUBLIC: A Mother's Hope |

A few weeks ago in the northern market town of
Kaga-Bandoro, the IRC's Peter Biro met Martine Yatanza and her son, 18-month-old
Blaise, who was malnourished and suffering from malaria. Martine — who had lost
three children to disease already — had brought Blaise to the town's IRC-run
hospital for help. "The child would probably have died if he hadn't received
care," Peter said. Although Blaise looked "extremely bad" when he came in, his
doctor expects the little boy to recover. | |
