Shaping a Legacy
When Dr. Peter Thuynsma came to The Fund Raising School for training, he
revealed that his work as a professional fundraiser takes him to the doorstep of
one of world's most incredible social movements every single day.
Philanthropy has the power to transform lives, institutions, and communities.
I was struck by the story of Dr. Thuynsma, from the University of Pretoria, who
came to Indianapolis at the end of August. Because of strategic support from the
Kresge Foundation and the South African Institute for Advancement, he was able
to join us as a part of a contract training program The Fund Raising School
offered for a contingent of South African university fundraising leaders. Read more about Peter's experiences at The Fund Raising

Giving to International Affairs
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and Giving USA Foundation
and have released an in-depth report about one of the fastest-growing segments
of U.S. charitable donations: international affairs.
“International affairs giving is an area that has seen some of the fastest
rates of growth of all of the subsectors that we have tracked,” said Giving USA
Managing Editor Melissa S. Brown, the Center on Philanthropy’s associate
director of research. Although giving is determined by many factors, support
following a global natural disaster, such as the 2009 earthquake in Haiti,
drives philanthropic support from the U.S. to international NGOs. This is one
area explored in “Giving to International Affairs,” the most recent topical
digest released as a part of Giving USA 2010. In addition to estimates of 2009
giving to international causes, the newly-released report includes motivations
for giving, key trends, and summaries of surveys about international aid. Order Giving to International Affairs

From A to Z: the Strategic Plan to the Annual
Report
The strategic plan and annual report are pillars by which nonprofit
organizations measure their goals and outcomes—organizational bookends for
charting the course and measuring their impact.
Strategic planning is essential for the effective leadership and management
of nonprofits, particularly in volatile and uncertain operating environments.
Could you use some help building and sustaining high performance through
strategic planning? The Fund Raising School and the School of Public and
Environment Affairs at Indiana University have partnered to offer this new
course, “Strategic
Planning and Nonprofit Leadership.” Learn more here.
Organizations have taken different approaches to the annual report as they
consider resource allocation – some are moving online or to a quarterly report
system. The bottom line: nonprofits, as organizations serving the public good,
have a responsibility to be transparent. Ways to demonstrate this transparency
vary. At the Center on Philanthropy, we hold ourselves accountable to delivering
an annual report within 90 days of the end of our fiscal year. You’re welcome to
take a peek at our newly released report. Take a peek at our 09-10 annual report....

Leadership and the Gender Lens
“You don’t have to have a lot of money to be a philanthropist,” said Dr.
Hester Klopper, R.N. Klopper will speak at the Center’s 2011 symposium on women
and global philanthropy, and is anxious tell the story of a network of
universities collaborating to train nurses in East Africa. She heads the School
of Nursing Science at Northwest University in South Africa and serves as a board
member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Klopper and
her colleagues leveraged their networks to create and lead a project involving
nine universities that are helping each other with faculty and curriculum
development.
Klopper knows that examining her role in leadership, capacity building, and
volunteerism using a gender lens is important and necessary. “We can show the
evidence of success in this project—our team has demonstrated that with a little
money invested in Africa, we can go much further.” You can hear more about what
Klopper’s experiences tell us about women and global philanthropy, and meet
other leaders like her, at the Women World Wide: Leading Through
Philanthropy symposium in March. Register for Women World Wide
