A Call to All the Women of Japan and the World: Follow in the Footsteps of Fukushima's Women! "It's about time we break the silence!"
September 22, as Prime Minister Noda declared he would "raise Japan's safety of nuclear power generation to the highest level in the world" at the U.N. meeting on nuclear safety in New York, women demonstrated outside the United Nations protesting, "How dare you talk about nuclear safety when you cannot even protect the children of Fukushima! Do not let the suffering of Fukushima's people go to waste. Stop the world's nuclear power plants!" On the flight home, we said to each other, "We should follow in the footsteps of the Fukushima women and gather women from across the nation to stage a sit-in!"

Second International Conference on Human Rights Education

In recognition of its position as the premier university of African scholarship and its commitment to social and economic transformation the Faculty of Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal has been selected to host the 2nd International Conference on Human Rights Education. The inaugural conference was hosted by the University of Western Sydney in 2010. The overall theme of this year's conference is "Celebrating Diversity and Achieving Social Justice through Human Rights Education".

The main theme for the South Asia Social Forum 2011 Bangladesh was set "Democracy for Social Transformation in South Asia: Participation, Equity, Justice and Peace". This
theme is to highlight and oppose the neo-liberal, hegemonic and authoritarian "poverty reduction" development policy and paradigm. The forum is intended to focus on this structural concern with a clear transformational agenda. However, there are various urgent and immediate economic, political and cultural concerns of the people, especially poor, women and marginalized communities, would be addressed in the forum.

The International Indigenous Women's Forum (known as FIMI according to its Spanish acronym) is a network of indigenous women leaders that is joined to local, national and regional organizations in Asia, Africa and America. FIMI has identified the importance to visualize the leadership role of indigenous women activists and promoters of indigenous people's individual and collective human rights through the systematization of experiences and good practices at global level. The Open Society Foundations' International Women's Program and the Disability Rights Initiative are pleased to announce a call for proposals addressing the situation of women and girls with disabilities in the following post-conflict countries: Nepal, Palestine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Colombia. UN Women's Fund for Gender Equality, a grantmaking fund initiated by Spain and dedicated to advancing women's rights and gender equality, announced its second Call for Proposals, inviting women's organizations and government agencies to apply for grants to support women's political and economic empowerment. In recognition of the recent developments in the Arab States region, which have created additional opportunities for supporting efforts to improve the life conditions of women and girls, the first phase of the Fund's 2011-2012 call will immediately focus on proposals that seek to empower women and their communities in this region. The online application process will be open October 24 - November 4, 2011.

The Centre for Women's Studies (University of York, UK) delighted to invite you to the "Arab Women, Media, and Sexuality" one-day conference at the University of York, to be held on the 26th of May 2012. The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) offers, as part of its bilateral development assistance, Advanced International Training Programmes of strategic importance to the social and economic development in the participants' countries. The International Training Programmes are specially designed for persons qualified to participate in reform processes of strategic importance on different levels and holds a position in their home organisation with a mandate to run processes of change. A New Resource: Social Watch: "The Basic Capabilities Index (BCI) 2011"
Social Watch, a network of citizen organizations monitoring social policies around the world, launched today (October 13, 2011) a Basic Capabilities Index (BCI) derived from well-being indicators which shows very slow progress in the last twenty years. This index contradicts the assessment of the World Bank, according to which extreme poverty would have halved around the world between 1980 and 2005. Read more

Urgent Action: Mesoamerican and International Feminist and Human Rights Organizations Demand Protection for Margarita González Carpio, Mexico

"We, the undersigned Mesoamerican and international feminist and human rights organizations, denounce the attempted rape and murder (feminicide) of Ms. Margarita González Carpio, a federal police officer in the Mexican state of Querétaro, by Mr. Salvador Cruz Neri, State Coordinator of the Federal Police in Querétaro. We demand that she be granted immediate precautionary protection measures and that her right to access justice for the violence she suffered be guaranteed..." Please send appeals to the Attorney General of the Republic, Attorney of Querétaro state, and copies to the Secretary of Public Safety.
