Politifact: Set your ObamaMeter on Darfur to "Promise Broken"
In 2008, the Obama Campaign promised that, “As president, Obama will take immediate steps to end the genocide in Darfur by increasing pressure on the Sudanese and pressure the government to halt the killing and stop impeding the deployment of a robust international force." Four years later, however, the situation in Darfur and other regions of Sudan has only gotten worse.
Since President Obama has been in office the violence in Darfur has continued. Millions of Darfuris remain in refugee and Internally Displaced Persons camps suffering from violence, starvation and genocide by attrition. By not keeping his promise in Darfur, President Obama has failed to adequately confront the genocidal policies and practices of the government of Sudan, which has further emboldened the Sudanese regime to pursue its violent agenda across Sudan, resulting in even greater numbers of Sudanese civilians subjected to state-sponsored violence, displacement and death.
President Obama has broken his promise on Darfur. Tell Politifact, and their ObamaMeter, it’s time to set the record straight.
