1) Chevron Launches Partnership to Reduce HIV Transmissions in
Africa (7/30/12)
Energy giant Chevron ( http://bit.ly/Cq1pl ) has announced a
new partnership to combat mother-to-child transmission of HIV
in Nigeria, Angola, and South Africa.
The Fortune 100 company will work with D.C.-based Pact, the
Business Leadership Council for a Generation Born HIV Free in
New York City, mothers2mothers in Cape Town, South Africa, and
the Geneva-based Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria to address the challenges associated with eradicating
HIV among newborns. The commitment, which was announced at the
2012 International AIDS Conference last week, was made as part
of a $20 million pledge by the company at the United Nations
High Level Meeting on AIDS in 2011 in support of a global plan
to eliminate new HIV infections among children by 2015.
With support from Chevron, Pact will work to build the capacity
of civil society organizations working to expand prevention of
mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) practices in Nigeria's
Bayelsa State, while BLC will work with the Nigerian government
to develop and implement models for accelerated PMTCT delivery
and mothers2mothers will lay the groundwork for establishing
its Mentor Mother model in the country. In addition, the Global
Fund will work to advance PMTCT programs targeting Angola and
South Africa.
Chevron has supported PMTCT efforts in the fight against the
global HIV/AIDS pandemic since 1986. "As a company, we depend
on a healthy society and healthy workforce," said Rhonda Zygocki,
executive vice president of policy and planning for the company.
"With HIV/AIDS disproportionately affecting women in Africa,
it is critical that we come together in the fight against this
disease. At Chevron, we recognize prevention of mother-to-child
transmission of HIV as both a critical intervention for the fam-
ilies of our employees and the communities where they work, as
well as a realistic approach to the elimination of HIV entirely."

2) Global Fund Reports Gains in HIV Treatment, Prevention of
Mother-to-Child Transmission (7/25/12)
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
( http://bit.ly/qrSJ ) has announced results showing a signifi-
cant increase in the number of people receiving treatment for
HIV and in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of
the virus.
As of June 2012, 3.6 million people living with HIV were receiv-
ing antiretroviral drugs in programs supported by the Global Fund,
an increase of 600,000 since the end of 2010, while the number of
pregnant women living with HIV who have received a complete course
of antiretroviral treatment now totals 1.5 million. One factor
contributing to these gains is the significant reduction in the
cost of antiretroviral drugs, with a year's supply for the least
expensive regimen now costing less than $100 per person, down
from more than $10,000 in 2000.
In addition, the number of HIV testing and counseling sessions
provided by Global Fund-supported programs increased 43 percent
over the last eighteen months, to 210 million. According to the
Global Fund, its programs have helped save 8.7 million lives
since the organization was established in 2002.
"As we focus our resources to increase impact, preventing mother-
to-child transmission is an area where we are achieving great
success," said Gabriel Jaramillo, general manager of the Global
Fund. "These results show that creating an AIDS-free generation
is now possible, but only if we push harder to get there."

3) Capital Area Food Bank Opens New Facility to Address Growing
Need (7/31/12)
In an effort to address a "growing hunger crisis" in the
Washington, D.C., region, the Capital Area Food Bank
( http://bit.ly/7U4B ) is opening a new $37 million dis-
tribution center, the Washington Post reports.
The new 123,000-square-foot facility will double the foodbank's
current storage space and increase its freezer and refrigerator
capacity. The facility also will feature commercial and teaching
kitchens, classroom space for nutrition education and cooking
classes, energy-efficient lighting, low-flow faucets, and solar
panels donated by BP. Much of the funding for the facility was
provided by the district's Office of Housing and Community
Development and a capital campaign led by Washington Post Co.
chair Donald E. Graham, hotel executive J.W. Marriott, Jr.,
and the late Abe Pollin and his wife, Irene. In recognition of
a $5 million gift from Carlyle Group founder and managing
director William E. Conway, Jr. and his wife, Joanne, the new
facility will be named the Bedford Falls Foundation Distribution
Center.
The Capital Area Food Bank serves as the central supplier for
more than 700 food pantries and nonprofits assisting more than
680,000 people in the D.C. area, including 200,000 children.
While the organization expects to distribute a record 33 mil-
lion pounds of food this year, up from 23 million pounds at
the beginning of the recession, it is only able to help three-
quarters of area residents in need.
"We are still not able to meet the growing demand," CAFB execu-
tive director Lynn Brantley told the Post. "The middle class is
under stress, and many people who have never needed emergency
food services find themselves at food pantries."

4) Foundations' Social Media Not Engaging Grantees, Study Finds
(7/27/12)
Although foundations increasingly are investing in social media
such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube videos, and blogs, nonprofits
tend not to pay attention to their funders' efforts on those
platforms, a report from the Center for Effective Philanthropy
( http://bit.ly/8jsHA7 ) finds.
Based on a 2011 survey of senior nonprofit leaders and managers
as part of a broader Grantee Perception survey administered by
CEP, the report, Grantees' Limited Engagement With Foundations'
Social Media, found that only 16 percent of the more than six
thousand grantees surveyed utilize at least one social media
tool created by their funders, while 52 percent said they used
none and 32 percent said they didn't know whether their funder
used social media. In terms of social media included in the sur-
vey, 10 percent of respondents said they checked their funder's
Facebook page, 6 percent followed their blog, 6 percent checked
out their videos, and 5 percent followed them on Twitter.
The report also found that nonprofits ranked social media lowest
as a helpful resource for learning about a foundation, below
individual communication, group meetings, published guidelines,
and Web sites. According to an analysis of the survey, grantees
use social media primarily to gather general information about
the foundation or content-specific information, rather than to
interact with funders.
"I think our survey findings raise critical questions for any
foundation that wants to use social media to connect to grantees,"
said CEP president Phil Buchanan. "It's not enough to simply be
online. You need to be intentional about what you are trying to
achieve with social media. As in any philanthropic endeavor,
making a difference requires clear goals, the right strategy to
achieve those goals, and measures of progress."

5) Douglas Foundation Announces $50 Million in Gifts (7/31/12)
Actor Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne, have announced gifts total-
ing $50 million through their foundation ( http://bit.ly/iHnrpB )
to five nonprofit organizations and institutions, the Los Angeles
Times reports.
Gifts were awarded to institutions with which Douglas, 95, and
his wife have had longstanding relationships, including a theater
in Culver City run by the Center Theatre Group the actor helped
establish in 2004; an Alzheimer's and dementia care unit at the
Motion Picture and Television Fund named after Douglas's father,
Harry Deminsky; the Anne Douglas Center for Women in Los Angeles;
and the Sinai Temple, which is home to the Kirk and Anne Douglas
Childhood Center.
The foundation also gave $5 million to St. Lawrence University
in upstate New York, from which Douglas graduated in 1939, in
support of the Kirk Douglas Scholarship fund. With the gift, the
scholarship program, which assists students from disadvantaged
backgrounds with academic promise and which previously had been
available only to juniors and seniors, will be opened to students
in all grades.
"Anne and I are of one mind in our philosophical approach to
philanthropy," said Douglas. "We believe caring is sharing."

6) Target Launches $5 Million Education Initiative (7/30/12)
Target Corp. ( http://bit.ly/54mEAl ) has announced a $5 million
initiative to support public schools in need.
Through the Give With Target campaign, the Minneapolis-based
retailer will select a hundred schools to receive grants of
$25,000 in time for the start of the 2012-13 school year. Grant
recipients will be announced in August. Four schools also will
receive a visit from the Bullseye Bus, Target volunteers, and
Disney Channel actress Bridgit Mendler.
In addition, Target is inviting Facebook users to vote for a
school of their choice, with the company donating a $25 gift
card for every twenty-five votes a school receives, up to a
maximum donation of $10,000 per school. Users can vote at the
company's Facebook page through September 8.
"Give With Target allows us to work with our guests to get
excited about supporting teachers and students and set them up
for a successful school year," said Laysha Ward, president of
community relations at Target. "Together we can raise awareness
about the importance of education and provide schools with the
resources they need."

7) Rhode Island Foundation Awards $15.3 Million in First Half
of 2012
The Providence-based Rhode Island Foundation has announced that
it awarded grants totaling more than $15.3 million in the first
half of 2012, including nearly $6.4 million in discretionary
awards made by foundation staff and directors.
The grants include $1.8 million awarded through the foundation's
Fund for a Healthy Rhode Island to bolster the primary care
system in the state; $800,000 to expand professional development
work in reading at the Learning Community charter school; and
$25,000 in inaugural grants from the Black Philanthropy Initia-
tive.
The foundation also awarded "strategy" grants totaling $2.2 mil-
lion to forty-two local nonprofits working in the areas of arts
and culture, community and economic development, education,
the environment, health, and human services to develop long-term
solutions to community issues. Those grants included $200,000 to
Riverwood Mental Health Services; $98,000 to the Rhode Island
Department of Children, Youth and Families; and $35,000 to the
Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre.
"Through these grants, the foundation is responding to urgent,
statewide issues by strengthening the nonprofit sector, support-
ing innovation, and encouraging collaboration and advocacy,"
said foundation president and CEO Neil D. Steinberg. "To do this,
we depend on the vision and generosity of our donors, who place
their trust and confidence in the foundation, so that together,
we can address Rhode Island's most pressing needs and opportuni-
ties."

8) HHMI Announces 2012 International Student Research Fellows
(7/27/12)
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute ( http://www.hhmi.org/ )
in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has announced its 2012 class of
International Student Research Fellows.
Fifty pre-doctoral candidates from nineteen countries, six of
which -- Australia, Bulgaria, Chile, Italy, Latvia, and Switzer-
land -- were not represented last year, each will receive $43,000
a year for the next three years and be mentored by senior scien-
tists at their respective institutions. The fellowship program,
which launched in 2011, supports international students during
their third to fifth years of graduate school, a period, say
young scholars, when it is difficult to secure support for their
studies.
The program builds on HHMI's longstanding commitment to funding
international scientists. Earlier this year, the institute
handed out International Early Career Scientists awards of
$650,000 each to twenty-eight U.S.-trained scholars to establish
independent research programs in twelve countries where funding
for scientific pursuits is scarce.
"We are pleased to be able to support some of the world's most
outstanding graduate students in the biomedical sciences," said
William R. Galey, program director for HHMI's graduate and medi-
cal education programs. "These students have been accepted to
prestigious graduate programs in the United States and have
demonstrated to the faculty of those programs that they have
exceptional talent. We see these students as having the potential
to become scientific leaders throughout the world once they have
completed their training."
