25th Year Update!

In our 25th year, The New York Women’s Foundation is proud to announce that with your support, we are awarding an unprecedented $5 million dollars in funding to support women-led, community-based solutions. This enables The Foundation to deepen our commitment, continue our strategic approach of investing in women to lift families and communities, and work towards long-lasting, broad-based change for 1.1 million women and children living in poverty in New York City.

The New York Women’s Foundation partners with New York City based nonprofits to advance economic security and justice, eliminate gender-based violence, and secure sexual rights and reproductive justice for women and families.
 
We invest in organizations that use a gender lens in their work to address the root causes of poverty, at the individual, community and systemic levels of transformation. Our capacity building grants further strengthen organizations and build women's and girls' leadership.
 
This month we are expanding our funding impact in two ways. Building on our experience of effectively supporting community organizing and broad-based solutions, The Foundation is increasing its investment in Systemic Impact funding. These multi-year grants will expand our support of policy initiatives and scale-up innovative models that eliminate barriers and/or create opportunities for sustainable economic security for women, girls and gender non-conforming individuals in New York City.
 
Our Initiative Against Sex Trafficking of Minors, a five year $5 million dollar effort, focused on the prevention and zero-tolerance of the sexual exploitation of minors, reflecting our continued commitment to anti-violence and safety-building work. The Initiative begins with the launch of our report Sex Trafficking of Minors in New York: Increasing Prevention and Collective Action, and our additional funding to increase education, services, community engagement and mobilization.
 
Lastly, to ensure that The New York Women’s Foundation continues to expand its reach and accessibility, we are delighted to share our new website. Our new site allows us to broaden our influence, better disseminate the impact of our work and to share and feature the vital work of our grantee partners.
 
As we look into our 25th Anniversary year, we want to invite you to join us as we continue to transform the lives and communities of New York City women and families. Did you know if Black America were a country, it would rank 16th in the world in the number of people with HIV? It's startling and deeply upsetting, but true. African-Americans make up 14% of America's population, but account for an estimated 44% of new HIV infections. The NAACP is working hard to address this crisis as more than just a medical concern; this is a social justice issue. Education is key, so we've published a manual—called The Black Church & HIV: The Social Justice Imperative—that empowers leaders in the faith community with the knowledge they need to help combat this crisis. You can help us stem the tide of HIV/AIDS in the black community by sharing the manual with your pastor or a leader in your community: http://action.naacp.org/have-an-impact The NAACP was proud to participate in the XIX International AIDS Conference last Wednesday in Washington D.C. where we joined the Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI) panel talking about AIDS in Black America in partnership with 16 other civil rights and civic organizations. This was the first time the conference has come to America in 22 years, and we left feeling more confident than ever that we can fight the HIV crisis in Black America. The first step is addressing the racial disparity in infection rates and recognize it for what it is: a crisis not just of public health, but social justice, as well. Our manual is a major step towards this goal, and the first step in our ongoing campaign. It provides faith leaders with a roadmap for discussing HIV as a social justice issue with their communities. These discussions will lead to increased awareness and advocacy--and ultimately a lower infection rate in Black America. You can have a powerful impact on the HIV/AIDS rates in your community. New equity investment marks continued momentum of recently launched Education Portfolio

Mumbai, India, July 25, 2012 – Acumen Fund, a pioneering nonprofit global venture fund addressing poverty across Africa and South Asia, today announced a INR 1.5 Crore ($300K) equity investment in Edubridge Learning Private Limited, a growing company that provides vocational skills training for low income youth across Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh

The investment builds on the recent launch of Acumen Fund’s Education Portfolio, which seeks to support private sector innovations that increase access to low-cost, high-quality learning and employability services for the poor. Acumen’s investments aim to support the development of early stage companies with a focus on meeting the needs of low-income market segments, an approach recently explored in a report released by the Monitor Group and Acumen entitled “From Blueprint to Scale.”

“Edubridge is an early stage company that has tremendous potential to significantly alter the landscape of opportunities for rural youth in India,” said Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO and Founder of Acumen Fund. “This is just one example of where we can help enterprises creating public goods in markets where government and commercial players have not fully met the needs of the poor. These investments allow us to leverage our patient capital to help launch businesses with creative approaches to major social issues.”

Based in Mumbai, Edubridge seeks to address the lack of opportunity and simultaneous need for skilled labor in India by training rural youth and placing them in entry-level jobs within various corporate sectors. Edubridge targets youth between the ages of 18 and 25 who are typically the first formally employed members of their family. The company has trained over 1,500 students to date and with this investment, Edubridge plans to scale its services from 12 to 30 centers over the next two years. The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is a key funder of the company and recently named Edubridge as “Best Start-Up” in their portfolio for 2011-2012.

“Edubridge’s goal is to fundamentally address the employability gap within India,” said Edubridge Founder, Girish Singhania. “By training these rural youth we are enabling them and their families to have a better future, while simultaneously improving the labor pool within India.”

India’s education system has struggled to meet the needs of a growing population in a rapidly developing economy, resulting in more than 50% of children aged 15-19 currently unemployed or out of school. Following the recent investment in Hippocampus Learning Centres, Acumen Fund’s Education Portfolio continues to expand in support of Acumen Fund’s global goal of impacting the lives of 150 million people by 2015. “It is clear that education offers one of the most viable pathways out of poverty, but there is room for much more innovation in how we ensure learning remains effective and relevant to employment,” said Ankur Shah, Interim Director of Acumen Fund India.

From Ecuador: Energizing a New Dream

From Ecuador: Energizing a New Dream   by John Perkins I am in Cuenca Ecuador. Ancient bastion of the Incan Empire. Colonial jewel of Spanish America. Here in the High Andes and in the Amazon rain forests that lie at their feet is where this journey of life really took off for me, a young Peace Corps volunteer, in the late 1960s. During this week, I've talked with many different people here: an Ecuadorian MD and his three adult children – two of them MDs – two women from the U.S. who moved here to find "a more balanced place to live," local waiters, taxi drivers, people on the street. . . this country reinvigorates me today, just as it did all those years ago. When I came to Ecuador in 1968 I was angry about the Vietnam War and the police brutality in the U.S. and deeply saddened by the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. Living among the Quechua of the Andes and Shuar of the Amazon, I learned that "the world is as you dream it." They said that the war, assassinations, and the brutality were the results of our greedy, materialistic, and exploitative dreams. We had given energy to a world-view that was threatening to destroy us. But, they continued, we could solve our problems. All we had to do was envision and energize a new dream. Now, standing in Cuenca's main plaza, looking at the cathedral, as I did so many times back then, I know that our crises are greater today than ever before. Global climate change, declining resources, species extinctions, economic and political collapse, violence --- the list of negatives is almost endless. Yet, I also feel a greater sense of hope. For the first time in history we are communicating with each other around the planet, instantaneously. People are waking up. In Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the U.S. we speak out and demonstrate – not just against a war or racial inequality but against the corrupt system that fostered them which in recent years has catapulted exploitation to new levels. We are forging a new dream and we are taking action to energize it. In a few days I retrace the steps I took nearly five decades ago and journey deep into the Amazon. With one huge difference. I will not be a lonely Peace Corps volunteer. Instead, I will be joined by 30 people who are dedicated to creating a new dream – on one of the many trips of The Pachamama Alliance. TPA's Awakening the Dreamer program now has more than 6,000 facilitators in 70 countries. People around the globe are determined to take back the reins. We the People are on the march. We will not be stopped. Back in the U.S. in a couple of weeks, I'll facilitate two workshops at the Omega Institute in upstate N.Y. that were seeded back in those Peace Corps days– the weekend Shapeshifting Leadership (Aug 24-26) and 5-day Advanced Shapeshifting (Aug 26-31). They are indicative of the steps that so many of us are taking to create a sustainable, just, peaceful, and thriving world. In these dark times of crises, there are many rays of hope. When we give energy to hope we offer ourselves and future generations the greatest gift possible. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at Omega. Vote Today: Don't Mess with Abortion Access for D.C. Women

Stop the restrictions! Tell your Representative to oppose the effort to limit access to abortion for women who live in Washington, D.C. With only a few days left until August recess, this is what they are prioritizing — an anti-abortion bill that the Senate will never consider? Well, the House of Representatives is at it again and this time, just to add insult to injury, they are going after women who have no voting representation in the House. Tell your Member of Congress to oppose the D.C. Abortion Ban and stop your Representative from making decisions for women about their reproductive health. H.R. 3803, also known as the "D.C. Abortion Ban," would ban almost all abortions in Washington, D.C. for women starting at twenty weeks post-fertilization. The legislation seeks to ban abortion after twenty weeks regardless of a woman's situation and without exceptions for rape, incest or to protect a woman's health. This unconstitutional bill follows the onslaught of reproductive health attacks that aim to deny women access to a constitutional right. The attacks this year have been particularly extreme: from state laws that defund Planned Parenthood to federal legislation that would require doctors to racially profile their patients before allowing them decide to terminate a pregnancy. We've said it once, we’ll say it again: our health is not up for debate! Tell your Representative to oppose the D.C. Abortion Ban and stop restricting women's access to reproductive health today.
