Fight for Our Democracy

Yesterday in Texas, we won a decisive victory in the fight against voting disenfranchisement laws.  A federal court struck down the Texas Voter ID law, saying that it unfairly discriminated against communities of color and was therefore in violation of Section 5 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The ruling sends an important message to South Carolina and other states covered by the Voting Rights Act.  Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act spells out specific states that have a history of discriminatory voting practices. Those states must pass special scrutiny when they make any changes to their voting laws, to ensure that there is no racial discrimination. Despite yesterday’s victory, the battle against voter suppression continues to rage throughout the country – and not only in states covered by the Voting Rights Act.   That’s why we’re asking that you sign this petition, supporting the work of the Department of Justice, advocating against discriminatory voting laws:   http://action.naacp.org/page/s/voting-is-not-a-privilege-it-is-a-right-   This summer has been a showdown between those who support equality and those who would suppress our right to vote. But the tide is turning.   Across the U.S., the NAACP and our partners are working with key state officials and the Department of Justice to fight laws that deny some voters a voice in our democracy.  And slowly, battles are being won.   The Michigan State Conference and the national NAACP advocated against Michigan’s proposed restrictive voting law changes—paving the way for Governor Rick Snyder to veto three measures that would have potentially impacted tens of thousands of Michigan citizens.   In Florida, we had a victory when the courts permanently removed harsh restrictions on voter registration drives. About the Maasai Girls Education Fund

The Maasai Girls Education Fund (MGEF) was created to improve the literacy, health and economic well-being of Maasai women in Kenya and their families through education of girls and their communities.

MGEF provides scholarships from primary school through university to girls who have never enrolled in school or who would be forced to drop out of school for cultural or economic reasons, and they are committed to each student until they have the knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce in Kenya.  With economic empowerment, this new generation of Maasai women will end early marriages and circumcision of girls and bring greater literacy, health, and economic well being to future generations.

MGEF also organizes community workshops to address the social customs and cultural beliefs that prevent girls from getting an education.

MGEF works in partnership with the Maasai community, including local area chiefs and women advocates for education of girls, to achieve its mission.

PESHAWAR, Aug 30: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Masood Kausar has called for strengthening Women Skill Development Programme (SKDP) in Fata with special focus on value addition and making the products attractive from demand and marketing point of view.

Presiding over a presentation on working of the programme at Governor’s House here on Thursday, he desired that qualified instructors should be hired for the programme, while the existing trainers should be offered refresher courses.

Fata Development Authority chief executive Sahib Shah and project director of the SKDP briefed the governor about working and future goals of the programme. Senior officials of Fata Secretariat were also present on the occasion.

The governor noted with satisfaction that 42 Women Skill Development Centres were functional in Federally Administered Tribal Areas and establishment of 30 more similar centres was in progress. However, he called for efficient monitoring of working of these centres.

Referring to the importance of introduction of non-traditional trades such as marble mosaic, designing, fruit and vegetable processing and preservation, bee keeping, kitchen gardening, embroidery, sewing etc, the governor took keen interest in display of the products and desired that extra efforts were needed to make the products attractive from marketing point of view.

Conceding to a proposal to develop one of the centres as a model institution in each tribal agency, the governor said that this was the best way to promote cottage industry in Fata.

He hoped that the programme would make the womenfolk effective contributors to socio-economic wellbeing of their respective families.

Meanwhile, the governor was told that a display centre existed in Peshawar and efforts were under way to establish similar centres in other cities, including one in Islamabad, to ensure proper marketing of the products.
