The holiday season is almost here – but before you get caught up in the madness of Black Friday sales, we want to remind you about a gift that costs nothing, but means everything: We want you to ask a woman or girl in your life to consider running for office someday. Give Inspiration to a woman in your life before December 31st.
As an added holiday gift, the first 100 women asked to join She Should Run before December 31st will receive a special phone call from a WCF-Endorsed Candidate personally encouraging them to run.
Season's Greetings to you and yours,
Erin L. Cutraro

MsRepresentation DAILY BRIEF: October 26, 2010 Please enjoy this digestible overview of important women and politics news - part of WCF's MsRepresentation project for the 2010 elections. Pelosi to Women: We Intend to Win For You In an exclusive conference call, Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Rosa DeLauro talk about the vital issues facing women this election year. Pelosi summed it up perfectly when saying, “It is impossible to exaggerate what’s at stake for women in this election.” Jill Miller Zimon has the details. Are Female Voters Tuned Out This Cycle? In a recent CNN poll, 23 percent of women polled described themselves as “extremely enthusiastic” about voting in the upcoming elections, compared with 38 percent of men. Sara Gould and Susan Wefald examine this enthusiasm gender gap, especially considering the record-breaking number of women running for office this year. Does Being a Mother Make You a Better Politician? Candidate for OK Governor Mary Fallin (R), says yes. But mom, writer, and politico Jodi Jacobson thinks otherwise - and points out the oddity of this debate, since motherhood has historically been used against women. Politics Daily’s Melinda Hennenberger interviewed Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who relishes the fact that her critics are attacking her, saying it only proves she is formidable and effective. Best Pelosi quote: "You didn’t come here to be in a popularity contest, you came here to get a job done. If I were not effective they wouldn’t care about me." Signs Point To Women Political Leaders in Times of Crisis With more evidence that women innately deal better with crisis, some are asking, Is A Bad Economy Good For Women Politicians? Jill examines the question. Are the Women Candidates in the Spotlight a Punchline? Syndicated columnist Mary Sanchez expresses her frustration over the visibility of candidates like Christine O’Donnell and Sharron Angle: "As a woman, I’m embarrassed. This is not what women suffragists envisioned a century ago. Frankly, we women haven’t come far enough politically to have flakes soaking up our share of the political limelight." Female Dems Stump for Sisters in Tight Races With many Democratic female incumbents facing a dead heat in the polls, many of their peers are campaigning alongside them. Jessica Brady of CQ reports: "Given that Pelosi made history just three years ago by becoming the first female Speaker, [Rep. Jan] Schakowsky said the desire among female Members to help their colleagues this year feels even more urgent." Does Gender Trump Ideology for Women Voters? No, says the Los Angeles Times–or at least not for women voters in California, where three of the four major party nominees in the governor’s and US Senate race are women. Key quote: "All told, the results of both surveys confirmed that ideology, not gender, is directing the vote in this tumultuous campaign season." Carnahan Touts Her Appeal Among Indies, GOPers (VIDEO) Missouri Sen. Candidate Robin Carnahan cites 5 reasons she is closing the gap in Missouri by appealing across party lines, including her opposition to earmarks and accountability for banks who took bailout monies. Non-Dems talk about why they support her on Republicans for Carnahan. Transgender Candidates Making Their Mark WCF-endorsed Oklahoma state legislative candidate Brittany Novotny is featured in a New York Times piece on transgender candidates who are bravely shaking things up in the 2010 cycle. Missing in New York: Top Women Campaign Staffers As MsRep has said before, political equality will not be achieved just by having more women run for, and win, elected office: Women must also be chosen for key appointed offices, hired as top staffers in political offices and on campaigns, and win contracts as political consultants. Unfortunately, as the NYTimes reports, the NY gubernatorial race between Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino features very few women involved at the highest levels of either campaign. America 16th in Women’s Power Quotient According to Big Think, the U.S. ranks 16th globally on the socioeconomic gender gap. …just keep in mind that the 2012 Project, co-sponsored by the Center for American Women in Politics, already has its sights set on the next presidential cycle and making sure women–particularly those age 45 and over–are properly encouraged to run for elected office. Women’s eNews’ Colleen Flaherty has the details. Thanks for reading today’s Brief! MsRepresentation says follow WCF on Twitter, @WCFonline, to get even more breaking women and politics news. MsRepresentation DAILY BRIEF: October 25, 2010 Please enjoy this digestible overview of important women and politics news - part of WCF's MsRepresentation project for the 2010 elections. Krystal Ball on Good Morning America: Stick to the Issues Krystal Ball continues to give positive and strong responses to the recent posting of pictures of her from a party. Yesterday on Good Morning America, Ball pointed out that this kind of negative personal attacks are what continually frustrate voters. She encourages more people in her generation to run for public office, and not to let any photos from their past get in the way. Fallin Injects Motherhood Into OK Gov’s Race Last week, MsRep made clear that women who run for office while also raising a family deserve praise and respect. But that doesn’t mean a woman who isn’t a wife or mother is unqualified to serve. In Oklahoma, GOP gubernatorial nominee Mary Fallin wrongly implies that her opponent, Democrat Jari Askins, is unfit to serve because she’s not a parent. Read more from the SFChron and HuffPo. Women’s Groups Give Buck the Boot, With Their Heels On The Women’s Voices Women Vote Action Fund has spent a whopping $800,000 on ads that take Colorado Senate candidate Ken Buck to task for his “high heels” comment made earlier this year. Jodi Jacobson reports. CT Dems Link McMahon, WWE to Female Degradation U.S. Senate candidate from CT Linda McMahon and her husband have made millions on professional wrestling, which state Democrats complain profits by objectifying women. In AK Senate Race, Clear Choices on Choice Anchorage Daily News reports that all three U.S. Senate candidates—including Republican primary victim, incumbent and write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski—offer distinct positions on reproductive choice. But only one, Democrat Scott McAdams, is pro-choice and proudly boasts his Planned Parenthood and Alaska Women’s Political Caucus endorsements. Do Bad Times Demand Good Women? The Atlantic’s Chris Good asks and answers that question. The Demonization of Nancy Pelosi Daily Beast’s Kirsten Powers examines the use of derogatory comparisons of the Speaker to Cruella de Vil and the Wicked Witch of the West. Best quote: "Juvenile attacks aside, the GOP has stayed clear of really questioning Pelosi’s competence, and for good reason. Nancy Pelosi will without a doubt be remembered as one of the most effective and powerful Speakers in U.S. history." X v. X Dispatches, Vol. 4: Clark Counters Bachmann with Civility In Minnesota’s 6th District race—the most expensive House race in the country—state senator Tarryl Clark is hoping that her more civil demeanor will win over independents tired of Michelle Bachmann’s combative style, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune reports. Will Women Voters Come Around Late for Democrats Next Week? Page Gardner of Women’s Voices Women Vote thinks so, and Caren Turner offers 10 suggestions for a Democratic Party hoping to bring women back. The Recession’s Impact on Women Over at BlogHer, WCF’s Jill Miller Zimon reports on White House summit to discuss the recession’s specific impacts on American women. State senator Linda Garrou, the Democratic Women of North Carolina, and NC’s Lillian List joined forces last Friday to decry a campaign ad that questions what a woman candidate putting on lipstick “really cares about.” Islamic Countries Still Lag on Women’s Rights, Equality The struggle for gender equality knows no borders and no country’s record is perfect. But two new studies confirm that women in Islamic countries continue to struggle more than in most other parts of the globe. State Update: The All-California Edition In California, this fantastic profile by the SacBee of Barbara Boxer and her importance to the Senate is worth reading, and in the governor’s race, Real Clear Politics has an update on Meg Whitman’s last-minute attempts to close the gap on Jerry Brown, who has doubled his lead over her in the past month. In related story, the LATimes chronicles developments in the closing moments for both candidates in the gubernatorial and US senate races. Thanks for reading today’s Brief! MsRepresentation DAILY BRIEF: October 22, 2010 Please enjoy this digestible overview of important women and politics news - part of WCF's MsRepresentation project for the 2010 elections. BREAKING: Kilroy Campaign Demands Removal of False TV Ad Negative campaign ads are nothing new, but outright lying seems to be a commonplace practice these days. At least that’s the case in OH-15, where incumbent Mary Jo Kilroy’s opponent ran what the campaign is calling a blatantly false advertisement. Kilroy’s camp has filed a claim and called for the ad to be pulled from the air. Jodi reports on this growing pattern of lies in political ads. Palin Aide Throws Motherhood Under The Bus Should Palin’s reported damage to campaigns be blamed on her having five children? Apparently, one of her aides thinks so. As an elected official herself, Jill Miller Zimon has a big problem with this. …once gendered language gets injected into a campaign: Now in Nevada comes Harry Reid—the Senate majority leader, one of the most powerful politicians in the country—telling Sharron Angle to “man up.” Please. Make. This. Stop. Here’s How Candidates Can Truly (Wo)Man Up Want to prove you’re a tough candidate–that you have the “cojones” to lead, or whatever stupid or offensive phrase the media is giggling about next week–then how about pledging, if elected, to appoint more women to state office? In Rhode Island, all four gubernatorial nominees did just that. Good for them. (Oh, and let’s make sure to hold the winner to that promise.) Back to School(ing): Prez and Ex-Prez Stump for Women Candidates Former President Bill Clinton went to Miami Dade College to tout Alex Sink for governor, and across the country, President Obama stumped for Patty Murray at a University of Washington rally. X v. X Dispatches, Vol. 3: House Candidate Won’t Pledge to Back Boehner Kristi Noem, who is trying to unseat WCF-endorsed Stephanie Herseth Sandlin in South Dakota’s at-large House race, says that if elected she may not vote for John Boehner for Speaker. How Female Candidates (Still) Dress The New York Times’ Ruth La Ferla deconstructs the myth that a new generation of women candidates are dressing differently today. Hillary Clinton media trainer Christine K. Jahnke provides the best quote: "A Palin effect? Show it to me. Women aren’t trying to look like Sarah Palin. That would be a mistake." Not the “Year of the GOP Woman” (AUDIO) In conversation with NPR, Center for American Women and Politics director Debbie Walsh dispels the idea that Republican women are dominating the cycle when, in fact, the primary win rate for Democrats is much higher this year. Political participation takes many more forms that voting—lobbying, rallying, and the all-important donating. Gender disparities in donating to campaigns are far greater than in these other forms, but a new study by the Center for Responsive Politics show where—and how—women are leveling the donor playing field. WCF’s own Jill Zimon Miller analyzed the numbers in a great post about shattering the “glass piggy bank”. Hurricane Sarah Leaves Behind Too Much Wreckage Politico’s Jonathan Martin explains why many Republican candidates prefer not to have Sarah Palin at their events: Her high-maintenance style wreaks too much havoc on the campaign, and some say she’s “self-centered and unhelpful to the cause.” This, however, pales in comparison to the damage left behind if her extreme tea party endorsees win on November 2. President Obama Discusses Women and the Economy In remarks to a Seattle audience yesterday, President Barack Obama talks about women as the economic engine of the middle class and in small business, and how the stimulus spending and national debt affect them and their families. Not sure where your local candidates stand on reproductive choice? Not to worry. NARAL’s easy, searchable voter guide has the answers. Pop Culture or Politics—Where Do Women Fare Better? The Atlantic’s Alex Eichler asks and answers that one. Megan Tady of In These Times says the media needs to stop talking about and depicting female candidates the way they do, and cites WCF Foundation’s Sam Bennett and the Name It. Change It. campaign.
