I have a daily practice of writing a gratitude list. In a year of grave challenges to the economic security of so many Californians, I find my gratitude lists are even more important. This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for:
Most importantly, I’m grateful to do this work in partnership with:
Thank you! May you, your family and your loved ones share a joyous Thanksgiving. |

Now YOU Can Balance California's Budget! Have you ever watched California’s drawn-out budget process and thought to yourself, "I bet I could balance the budget?" Next 10, a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging and empowering Californians to improve the state’s future, presents the California Budget Challenge. This easy-to-use interactive tool will walk you through the choices
legislators face when balancing our budget. With each choice, you’ll learn about
the issues—from corporate taxation to K–12 education—and see whether your
decisions close or widen the state’s deficit. It's also an opportunity for you
to incorporate the insights gained from the Foundation's work with the California Budget Project. This
research describes how the governor’s proposed budget cuts will have a
disproportionate impact on women. | ||

It has been over a month now since I returned from the Women’s Foundation of California tour of California’s Central Valley, Sowing Change 2010. As a result of having my consciousness expanded to include the world I saw 100 miles from my home in LA, I am much more aware of what I eat and drink, because most of it comes from or through the Central Valley. I want my 12 and 14 year old daughters to understand the injustice that is happening to the residents of our state, of our country. Read more
An Open Letter to Meg Whitman
By Joy Picus
Dear Meg,
Now that the elections are over, I hope you are looking for other ways to make a difference in this world. I’d like to make a suggestion for positive ways in which you might use the vast sums that you have earned. Look at what other billionaires have done with their money and see it as a model. Read more

A Woman Who Means Business!
In honor of Jan Tuttleman’s commitment and hard work in the field of women’s philanthropy, Jan was honored with the Women Who Mean Business Award by the San Diego Business Journal in October!
Jan is continuing her family's long tradition of giving back to the community. For years she worked on women’s issues in the Jewish community. To broaden the scope of her efforts and include the wider San Diego community, Jan partnered with Gayle Tauber and Linda Katz to create Women Give San Diego, a donor circle of the Women's Foundation of California. We are pleased to note that Jan has recently joined our Board of Directors.
Congratulations Jan!

We are honored to co-sponsor this year’s 2011 California Working Families Policy Summit. The summit gathers together leaders from the legislature, state and local governments, nonprofit and for-profit organizations and local communities. Leading advocates will review Governor Brown's just-released budget and priority policy proposals to improve the health and well-being of California’s families. Recommendations will focus on health care, welfare, school services, early learning, childcare, asset building, housing, food stamps, nutrition programs and paid leave.
Urban Habitat’s Director of Programs Connie Galambos Malloy has been selected as one of the first eight members of California’s inaugural Citizens Redistricting Commission. The Commission will redraw the boundaries of state legislative, congressional and Board of Equalization districts.
Connie is a former fellow of the Women’s Policy Institute (WPI), a program of the Women’s Foundation of California. She credits the time she spent in Sacramento as a WPI fellow as key to her decision to apply for the Commission. “My experience at WPI means I will have so many resources to drawn upon. WPI was where I learned about state commissions. When I saw the redistricting commission opportunity, I knew it was a long shot but felt that I had something to offer and that I would have a lot of support.” Read more
